Nigeria has recently signed a significant agreement with a Russian consortium to revive the long-dormant Ajaokuta Steel Plant. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Nigeria’s Ministry of Steel Development and the Russian companies Tyazhpromexport (TPE), Novostal M, and Proforce Manufacturing Limited.

Key details of the agreement include:

  1. Rehabilitation and Completion: The Russian companies will oversee the rehabilitation and completion of the Ajaokuta Steel Plant, which has been inactive for decades. They will also manage the National Iron Ore Mining Company (NIOMCO) in Kogi State.
  2. Technical Expertise: The Russian partners will provide technical expertise and training for Nigerian engineers and workers.
  3. Economic Impact: The project is expected to create over 500,000 jobs, both directly and indirectly, and reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported steel. This would potentially save Nigeria billions of dollars annually.
  4. Timeline: The project will commence after feasibility studies, with full completion anticipated in a few years.

This partnership aims to revive Nigeria’s industrial base and help achieve economic diversification through steel production.
