Doosan Heavy Industry deploys first large gas turbine at south Korea CHP project

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction’s entry into the large gas turbine market marks a significant development in South Korea’s energy sector. By collaborating with Korea Western Power Co., Doosan will supply its first domestically developed 270-MW class gas turbine for the Gimpo combined heat and power (CHP) plant. This project positions South Korea as a new competitor in the global gas turbine market, which has traditionally been dominated by established players such as Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, Siemens, GE, and Ansaldo Energia.

Korea Western Power Co. (KOWEPO) and Doosan Enerbility have successfully commenced commercial operation of the 270-MW “K-Gas Turbine” at the 500-MW Gimpo Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant in Gyeonggi Province. This marks a significant achievement as South Korea’s first domestically produced gas turbine.The K-Gas Turbine is notable for its compact design, measuring 11.5 meters in length and weighing 330 tons. This makes it smaller and lighter than conventional steam turbines, offering efficiency and versatility for power generation. The success of this turbine reflects the collaborative efforts between KOWEPO and Doosan Enerbility and represents a major step in strengthening South Korea’s technological independence in the energy sector. Building on its development efforts since 2013, Doosan reached a pivotal moment in 2019 with the final assembly of its domestically developed turbine. Recently, on June 28, 2023, Doosan signed a $213 million contract with Korea Midland Power Co. (KOMIPO) to supply equipment for the 569-MW Boryeong New Combined Cycle Power Plant. This plant, located in Boryeong City, South Chungcheong Province, is expected to be operational by June 2026. The contract includes the supply of a gas turbine, steam turbine, and heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs), which are crucial for the combined cycle power generation process.

Additionally, on July 28, 2023, Doosan achieved another milestone by beginning commercial operation of the 270-MW class gas turbine at the 500-MW Gimpo Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant in Gyeonggi Province. This turbine was developed in collaboration with Korea Western Power Co. (KOWEPO). The successful deployment of this domestically produced gas turbine marks a significant step for Doosan in positioning itself among global gas turbine manufacturers and strengthening South Korea’s role in the energy industry.
