First RESPONDENT project demo in Athens in October

The RESPONDENT project’s first demonstration is set to take place on 15 October 2024 at renewable energy construction company Kiefer Tek’s headquarters in Athens.

The aim of the demonstration is to validate the project’s local weather forecasting and renewable energy power generation AI/ML algorithm under real-world conditions.

The algorithm draws on the Copernicus satellite climate and atmosphere monitoring service (CAMS) data and is intended to showcase the potential of space-based data in optimising energy production and efficiency.

“This pilot demonstration is undoubtedly a pivotal moment for RESPONDENT, representing the culmination of all of our hard work up to this point,” said project coordinator Effie Makri, VP of research and innovation at telecom engineering company Future Intelligence (FINT).

“It allows us to showcase the cutting-edge technology we’ve developed and its potential to demonstrate the capabilities of European space technologies to not only contribute to the ambitions of the EU Green Deal, but to decrease Europe’s dependencies on imported fossil fuels and shield against geopolitical disruptions.”

The RESPONDENT (Renewable Energy Sources Power fOrecasting and syNchronisation for smart griD nEtworks maNagemenT) project, which is supported through Horizon Europe, is focused on enhancing the integration of renewable energy sources into Europe’s power grids through the utilisation of European space technology.

The project draws on historical and forecast weather data coupled with advanced AI/ML models to predict the renewable energy output. With data from the Copernicus programme and FINT’s IoT weather stations, improvements of 8-12% in accuracy over current solutions are anticipated.

The project also aims to integrate socio-economic data with advanced AI/ML for future demand forecasting.

A further aspect is focussed on the integration of Galileo satellite timing and synchronisation services into phasor measurement unit devices to enhance smart grid operation, anticipating a 50% reduction in timing losses and a 95% improvement in immunity against potential attacks.

The validation of this service is planned to form the focus of the project’s second demonstration, which is due to take place at IREC’s labs in Catalonia, Spain.

RESPONDENT was launched in November 2022 and runs until April 2025.
